I hate making websites

First ever blog post….am I doing this right?
Alrighty friends, this is it, the inaugural post! I’m absolutely going to complain about the making of this website. I am MANY things, however a graphic designer or website designer I am NOT. I’m actually fairly certain I’ve done this whole thing incorrectly, and that one day (when I’m rich and famous), a website designer will take a look at the back end and ask me “why…just why?”
The first hurdle was creating the website. I was horrified to realize that the default webpage URL for WordPress is the email you use to create your account. That happens to be my actual day to day email, which I keep kind of private for obvious reasons. Thanks WordPress, but I actually didn’t want that splashed everywhere. I’m positive it’s still available somewhere in the archives of the internet, which does freak me out a bit.
Moving on we have the WHACK AS HELL “website building tools.” I am a simple gal with simple knowledge, and that knowledge does not include any dev tools, coding, or website know how. This whole blog is being held together with pages and hyperlinks. As an aside, I think it’s fascinating how heavily AI is being pushed for backend development. I am absolutely not using any AI (though I will admit that perhaps this would be cleaner if I did…suffer in my imperfect humanity).
The one thing I adore is that I got to customize my color scheme. I can actually hear my mother in my head telling me that light colors on light backgrounds are atrocious to read, but I actually do not care. Teal is my favorite color, and it’s gonna be the basis for most of this site because it makes me happy. Same with the font, it’s a nice serif font because I think they’re easier to read.
Ok so you may be thinking to yourself “Shea, if you hate websites so much and you’re so bad at them, why are you making this?” So basically…this is a result of too much free time one night, and a timely suggestion from some lovely and encouraging friends. Within the SCA, that medieval stuff I mentioned in my About section, there are awards. In order to be considered for awards, you need to have your work readily available to showcase. The best way to do that is a blog. (Allegedly….it’s what people say anyway.) BUT that isn’t my only reason for making this site. I do a lot, and it’s hard to keep track over the years of all the things I’ve done. Hopefully I can keep up with this site, and it’ll help to track the things I’m doing and how it’s evolved with time. Also, I really love writing and I hardly get to do it. I imagine not many people will read this site (unless you know me personally…hi mom), so it’ll function like a digital public diary.
Anyway, I’ve been staring at this screen for too many hours and I have a headache (it really is those damn computers, isn’t it?) so that’s all for now. Cheers, Shea
